Company History
Over 66 Years of History
William Easson began trucking in 1945, hauling apples from Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley to local markets within the Province of Nova Scotia. William's brother, Phillip, joined the Company as a partner in the 1950's. William handled the office and dispatch, and Phillip took care of the equipment and maintenance.
Today, William and Phillip Easson have retired and William's three sons own and operate the company. Paul Easson, a graduate of Saint Mary's University and a chartered accountant, looks after finance and operations. Peter Easson, has a Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing from Acadia University and handles rating and sales. Tom Easson, is a graduate of Nova Scotia Community College and is a registered mechanic. He manages the purchase and maintenance of equipment.
Through the late 1950's and into the 1980's Eassons Transport continued to expand, adding committed runs for the Bakery Industry throughout NS and NB. A contract was also secured during this period to handle the pick up and delivery for CP Inter-Modal in the Province of Nova Scotia. Eassons long haul business continued to grow as well, with the addition of produce loads to the provinces of NF, NB, and PEI. Traffic to the Province of Newfoundland represented 75% of Eassons volume. This continued through to the mid 1980's, peaking at 30-40 loads per week to the Newfoundland market place.
With the decline of the fishing industry in the mid and late 1980's, back hauls from Newfoundland disappeared. Eassons Transport then looked to other markets to support its existing fleet and future growth destinations along the Eastern Seaboard or the United States quickly represented the majority of moves outbound from Eastern Canada. In order to return to Canada it required taking loads from the U.S.A. to Montreal and Toronto. This placed equipment for the third and final leg, the return trip to Eastern Canada. This traffic consisted mainly of truckload and less than truckload, time sensitive fresh or frozen food products.
In 1993, Eassons Transport added satellite tracking and communication to all its reefer tractors. This allows customers to track time sensitive shipments.
In 1995, Eassons Transport opened a dry freight division under the name Elite Fleet, in partnership with Debra Gioia. Based in Moncton, New Brunswick, Elite Fleet operates 55 dry vans and 45 tractors. All dry vans are 53 feet long, 102" wide and 110" high, and are equipped with air ride. Eassons Transport and Elite Fleet now operate a combined fleet of 155 reefer trailers, 64 dry vans and 160 tractors.
Serving truckload destinations to all points in Canada and the USA An LTL service is also available from Toronto and Montreal, to Atlantic Canada, for dry, fresh and frozen shipments.
In the fall of 1997, Eassons Transport purchased Sarsfield Transport. Sarsfield Transport was a small company with 17 reefer trailers and 12 tractors. This increased Eassons Transport fleet to 70 tractors and 75 reefer trailers. In the summer of 1998 the assets of McNeil's Transport were taken over, adding an additional 20 tractors and 25 reefers. This brought an increase in business, mainly on the Toronto to Newfoundland lane.
In the fall of 1998 Eassons Transport opened an office at 41 Sagona Ave., Mt Pearl, to better serve the Newfoundland customer base. All shipments outbound from Newfoundland and all shipments inbound from NS, NB and PEI are dispatched from this office.
In the summer of 1999 Eassons Transport opened an office in Etobicoke, ON to better handle it's growing LTL business. In the summer of 2001 all dispatch responsibilities for shipments outbound from ON and PQ were moved to the Etobicoke office.
In 2004 Eassons Transport Limited opened a Brokerage Division managed by Peter Easson and is located in Kentville, Nova Scotia.
